Book Reviews of Kiss and Tango: Looking for Love in Buenos AiresBook Review: An honest view into an adventurous life. Don't you wish you could too? Summary: 5 StarsHow many of us have dreamed, yearned, or lusted of just letting go of the drudgery of our lives and live a grand adventure? This is that kind of story!
Kiss and Tango is the story of a brave girl, Marina, who did just that. It is her adventure story of her pursuit of that, which she wanted to perfect... The Argentinean Tango, and the world that revolves around it.
Her story takes us though her travels, trials, thoughts, moods, and experiences of her pursuit of being a professional Tango performer. Her search for her Tango soul mate. It is a fascinating tale of struggle and perseverance. It is written in the contemporary vernacular, as if she were there telling it to personally.
Reading Kiss and Tango, is like being in a cafe with a good friend over a cup of coffee, listening to each other's adventures and musings. Its fascinating, its fun, and it makes you wish to just let go, and follow your own adventure.
Book Review: Fabby. Page turner, could not put it down. Summary: 5 StarsStraight up front: I know the author and have danced with her in Bunoes Aires and London, so I'm biased.
I got the book last Monday. Read some while sitting on the train back to Cambridge (UK). I "accidently" picked the book up on Wednesday evening and finished it at 1:30am.
I really like this book. It is a journey into the dream land of Tango.
Sometimes I laughed out loud, other times I felt sadness, and I was even slightly surprised about how far the naughty bits go, but it is all part of Marina's Tango story and, for me, fits.
I have seen many people get caught up in Tango, radically changing their lives for their love of the dance, and it has been a pleasure to read a very well described account of this phenonemon.
The 1st time I met Marina in B.A. I was too afraid to ask her to dance (she was very good), but we had some nice chatters. The second time I was in B.A. I did manage to ask and the dancing was lovely.
No, I do not figure in the book.
To the chap that wrote the first review: are you scared of women liking sex?
Book Review: As a dancer..... Summary: 2 StarsI thought it was cool that a woman had the nerve to follow a dream and move to a completely foreign city.
However, it's NOT cool that she lived off her rich parents' dime and didn't bother to get a job. It's not cool that she lied to her friends and told them that she taught English when in fact she lived in an apartment with a doorman while doing nothing.
It's not cool that everyone she danced with thought she was, ahem, 'EASY', shall we say.
And the most unfortunate thing at all is that after years of not working and doing nothing BUT dancing tango and ballet, she still looks like and ABSOLUTE beginner (judging from her website).
Hey, at least she got mom and dad to fly her to Greece once the going got tough. That's pretty cool.
Book Review: It's all true! Thank you, Marina! Summary: 5 StarsAs a fellow tanguera who lived for several months in Buenos Aires in search of the same things--love, tango, a purpose in life--I was delighted to find this book!
In the beginning, Marina sees everything Argentine and tango with stars in her eyes; her naivete is at times totally hilarious, but eventually, she, like me, becomes disillusioned with the tango scene and the shallow and louche characters inhabiting that world. Her book captures the allure of tango while also exposing the sleaziness; it's an incredibly accurate picture of the tango scene in the US and Argentina. Plus, it's very entertaining and funny.
Book Review: Good Stuff Summary: 4 StarsI found the book to be more of a study of North American vs Latin American culture than sex sex sex. When love gets involved, things obviously kick up a notch. A great read, hauntingly true, & teaches some really good lessons. I'm going through the same thing with salsa dancing, so I can relate to Marina's plight.
Buy it if you like romance, Latin culture, and going through a woman's head.
