Book Review: All right, but not as good as the first.
Summary: 3 Stars
Vol. 2 supposedly shows us the 'backstory' for how Kei and Ranmaru met and got together. We meet Ran's sister's and his grandfather, both of which are excellent supporting characters.
Trouble is, I feel a lot of the main stories in this book contradicted the opening in vol. one. Having read that, there really wasn't all that much more I needed to know about these two and their past.
Sadly, this book hits a *major* pet peeve of mine: I absolutely *loathe* sunshine-y 'love overcomes disability' themes. That theme is here in great force throughout the post-accident scenes in the Kei and Ran stories. I can never come away from something like that without feeling insulted. I'm not lookingfor a wallow in angst, but a bit more focus on the realities of a relationship with a disabled person, however 'slight' Ran's outward disability appears to be, would be refreshing, indeed. Folks who berate Ran's insecurity might want to factor in that information. Being disabled in Japan is *not* easy.
As for the Kai and Masa story...*shiver*. I don't care fore for the Masa and Kai pairing--the age difference--but it provides a much-needed reminder of the yakuza connection in the lives of the main characters.
