Book Review: A Must-Read for all Eager fans
Summary: 5 Stars
"Knight's Castle" is an excellent follow-up to "Half Magic". In my opinion, this and the first book are the best in the entire series. They just have a special charm that sets them apart, though the other books are still quite good.
This story focuses on Roger, Anne (Martha's children), Jack, and Eliza (Katharine's children) and their adventures with a castle that magically comes to life on certain nights. Things the children innocently make happen during the day have very realistic implications at night (such as building a toy city in the afternoon, and then finding that the knightly world has modernized when it comes alive). A mixed cast from Robin Hood and Ivanhoe populate the magic world.
Part of what makes this book so enjoyable is the Olde English. The characters use words such as "forsooth" and "saucy varlet", but their often-sarcastic dialogue makes the language easy to understand. I laugh out loud quite a bit every time I read this book. One of my favorite parts is when the knights are playing baseball and the umpire declares a pitch a foul. The opposing team gets outraged and starts yelling things like "A pox upon thee! Slay the umpire!"
And of course, no one should forget the wonderful illustrations. The pictures are detailed and sweet. They are MUCH better than the ones chosen for the cover art in the later editions (so don't let the ugly covers fool you). If you enjoyed "Half Magic", you should definitely read this one. It is fantastic.
