I've studied K's books for 18 years and found I've grown the most from this slim volume. Beautifully expressed, delightfully concise and at times stunning in its clarity, it's a watering hole I return to again and again to seek refreshment, each time seeing new things in its clear reflection. A small book that grows ever larger as the years go by, there is more wisdom in its 100 or so pages than in whole libraries of more conventional thinking. It's the potent distillation of a philosophy that holds the truth above all personal considerations of self-image and orthodoxy. The book consists of around 50 short passages, starting with descriptions of nature, animals or meetings with people and then attempts to put these happenings into context, presented with a directness of insight sometimes missing from his other books. With a lucidity that some have mistaken for arrogance, he swims against the currents of comfort and complacency to reach the high islands of truth. To quote the book, "A cultured man is discontented with his culture." In his relentless pursuit of the self, going on where others have long given up he offers us nothing to aid us, indeed one by one he exposes our mental refuges so that we too might be free. There are no handholds here for the ego. He will not be mistaken for a psychotherapist. I wouldn't though recommend this as an introduction to K. Start instead with Think On These Things (This Matter Of Culture as it was originally published in England) and then try Commentaries On Living before tackling the shorthand and minimalism he uses here.
