Book Review: 3 STARS FOR THE STORY

This trilogy has been my favorite work since I was in high school. I own several copies of my own, and I recently ordered the first volume of Nunnally's translation. I do not know Norwegian and, therefore, can't comment on the accuracy of this version, but I found it quite humdrum and dull. I must agree that this version will allow a wider range of readers to enjoy the remarkable story line and characters, but I felt that it missed the very elements that transport me to medieval Norway. To me, it was like reading the Cliff Notes to Shakespeare....you get the story, but not the flavor. I like the archaic language; it lends a certain flavor to the story. I also prefer the more detailed notes of the previous version. I am sure that the new translation is faithful to Undset's first Norwegian edition, perhaps more so than Archer's. However, I have read the previous version many, many times and still find it engrossing; I read it nearly once a year. I will make myself read the other volumes of the new translation, but won't read them over again. I will continue to read Archer's version.
