Book Review: Trials of the king

As if being sucked down a toilet, deposited in the world of Shinkoku, declared king of the Mazoku and getting engaged to a royal brat weren't enough, now Yuri has a REAL problem.
And having had everything set up in the first volume, "Kyo Kara Maoh" charges off into political struggles and Magical Itemland with its second volume. It has a rather disconcerting return to Earth right in the middle of it (as well as Wolfram's sudden about-face), but both the humour and the fantasy are upped considerably.
Yuri arrives at a human village and finds out just how nasty the conflict between humans and Mazoku is. And after a child is killed in an attack, his magic flares up again in a dramatic display of his power. He finally decides that for the sake of peace between Mazoku and humans, he'll become the Maoh -- but on his coronation day, he has to stick his hand in a waterfall.
Guess what -- in true Narnian style, he immediately reappears in front of the toilet of school.
But a trip to a public bath goes awry when he gets sucked underwater yet again, and reappears in Shinkoku (also in a bath, very awkwardly). Turns out war is brewing again between humans and Mazoku, and the best hope for avoiding it is for Yuri to find the legendary demon sword Morgrif. With Conrart and a deeply seasick Wolfram, he sets out on a journey to find it.
Things become somewhat more serious in the second part of "Kyo Kara Maoh," since a newly motivated Yuri decides that he's gonna do his part for world diplomacy, peace and avoidance of child abuse. When he isn't having horribly embarrassing personal disasters, of course -- ranging from Wolfram's flipflopping emotions to another encounter with the sinister Adelbert.
Unfortunately the storyline stops dead right in the middle for no apparent reason, since Yuri spends about three pages on Earth before getting zapped back. And Wolfram suddenly goes from loathing Yuri to being wildly jealous of him ("NAKED?! You were doing indecent acts with someone you don't know in the other world!"), climaxing with a hilariously suggestive-sounding scene involving contact lens adjustment.
Fortunately there's still a lot of comedy in here, both in action (poor Yuri almost gets molested by the guys in the bath, and when Gunter tries to rescue him he gets attacked instead) and in dialogue ("Your subjects are like your children!" "I'm only fifteen, but I already have so many kids...").
This particular volume also has some fun expanding the supporting cast, giving Wolfram a few dimensions beyond brat-prince, stoic Gwendel's love of kittens, and hints of Conrart having a lost love. And Gunter's adoration of Yuri is shown in full, with a hilariously exaggerated account of his appearance in Shinkoku.
The second volume of "Kyo Kara Maoh" has some seemingly random events going on, but is still fluffy and humorous enough to be worth watching.
