Book Reviews of L.A. Heat: A NovelBook Review: For Pat of Archerland Summary: 4 Stars
I'm assuming this is the same Pat from Archerland, which is why I'm buying the book despite delays. Just want you to know (because I can't find an email to tell you privately) I love your work, especially Witness, Slasher and the Lynx and look forward to reading a published book from what seems to be David's point of view.
You are one of my favourite authors and I'm glad to see you published but would prefer published versions of your web published stories, if that's okay.
Good Wishes,
Madeline.
Book Review: Gay detective comes out Summary: 4 Stars
A tough repressed gay detective, David Lane, solves the case of the carpet killer, involving his chief suspect, and ultimately, accomplice, the handsome playboy computer wizard, Chris Bellamere. The suspense and tension is maintained throughout as the plot, and characters' relationships, take one turn after another, and one's hopes increasingly long for the outcome that our two heroes themselves, David and Chris, daren't even hope for. But will they both survive all the dangers to reach the end to achieve it?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it is well written, and the characters are real and likeable, even David Lane's detective partner, the homophobic Martinez proves to have redeeming qualities.
Book Review: Good, good read Summary: 4 Stars
LAPD detective David Laine and his partner Martinez Diego are chasing a serial killer, known as the Carpet Killer, through the gay community of Los Angeles. Several men have been brutally killed and their bodies dumped.
All leads are pointing to Chris Bellamere, an openly gay playboy who knew the victims. In the eyes of the homophobic members of the LAPD, that means he must be their killer, and they look for evidence to prove it. Fortunately for Chris, David is also gay, though closeted, and will not allow Chris to be railroaded. But when David falls for Chris, he is determined to do whatever it takes to prove Chris' innocence.
Brown brings a new spin to the "cop falls for prime suspect" story. A high level of personal danger, a light dose of humor, and a respected cop coming out of the closet provide the emotional ties to well-defined characters that you can't help but care about. The ending will leave you breathless.
I can't wait to see more of this duo.
Armchair Interviews says: New and unique "character" twists for a mystery.
Book Review: Great first novel, now give me MORE!! Summary: 5 Stars
I had enjoyed the main characters in several short stories and had wondered how the author envisioned their first meeting. I could not have imagined anything better than the tale of romance, suspense, serial murder, social commentary, and good old fashioned whodunit provided in LA Heat.
While not featuring the level of eroticism typical of the short stories featuring Chris and David, the depth of feeling was still there.
I'd recommend this novel to anyone that likes a great mystery full of suspense. It keeps you guessing until the end about the identity of the villain.
And for the author, please bring us more!
Book Review: Impressive debut Summary: 5 Stars
L.A. Heat is the kind of book that makes you wonder how this could be a debut novel. This suspenseful, carefully-plotted mystery has all the earmarks of some of the best (and more seasoned) mystery pros in the business. Its setting is realistic and at times seamy, its characters sympathetic and real, its attention to detail (especially police procedure) astonishing, and its pacing deft...definitely in the category of "can't put down." I look forward to more from P.A. Brown. She's a winner.
