Book Review: The Lion King on Broadway book: A Visual Treat
Summary: 5 Stars
Julie Taymor's new book on the adaptation of Walt Disney's "The Lion King" for the Broadway stage is an incredible journey of discovery. I personally can recall the day I heard that they were adapting it for the stage, and my initial reaction was one of incredible disappointment. I could not fathom how they could bring this particualr story to life on stage, as they so brilliantly did with "Beauty and the Beast". Then I heard that Julie Taymor would be directing the show, and my fears were immediately calmed. Her unique vision and style are explored quite comprehensively in this excellent book, as the show moved from conceptualization to workshop performances to opening on broadway. Ms. Taymor's description of the audience reaction to the first preview performance was, to say the least, very palpable. Emotionally I felt as if I were sitting in the theatre experiencing it first hand. The thrill of live theatre captured in words.
The book is written in a manner reminiscent of a diary, cataloging every step of the creative process, from designing, to casting, to directing. Lavishly illustrated with beautiful photographs, most in color, as well as original scenery, costume and even lighting designs, one really gets the feeling of being "along for the trip" from beginning to end.
If you are a fan of "The Lion King", or a fan of Julie Taymor's brilliant artistry, or just a fan of the creative process, you will not be disappointed by "The Lion King; Pride Rock on Broadway".
