Book Review: The Artistry of Simba and Friends on Broadway
Summary: 5 Stars

Of all Disney's popular animated movies, "The Lion King" seemed the least likely candidate for a stage production. Yet from the moment the "The Lion King" opened on Broadway, it began to draw both audiences and praise.

The credit for the production's huge success belongs to Julie Taymor, the award-winning director and designer who turned the most popular Disney movie of all time into a powerful and mesmerizing piece of performance art. Ms. Taymor provides a glimpse into the process that brought Simba and company to life on stage in her book, "The Lion King: Pride Rock on Broadway."

This book shares many of the challenges faced by the author as she attempted to meet Michael Eisner's desire for a traditional Broadway musical. These challenges ranged from staging unstageable scenes from the movie such as the wildebeest stampede to inventing puppets that convey all of the emotions necessary from the famous characters.

It is the sketches and photographs of the puppets that comprise most of the book. The designs are fascinating and demonstrate the amazing creativity Taymor brought to her production. Some of the puppets are so beautiful that one questions whether they belong on stage or instead should be hanging on the walls of a gallery.

"The Lion King: Pride Rock on Broadway" will be enjoyed by anyone who loved Simba and his friends--both on the screen and on stage.

Book Review: The Lion King on Broadway book: A Visual Treat
Summary: 5 Stars

Julie Taymor's new book on the adaptation of Walt Disney's "The Lion King" for the Broadway stage is an incredible journey of discovery. I personally can recall the day I heard that they were adapting it for the stage, and my initial reaction was one of incredible disappointment. I could not fathom how they could bring this particualr story to life on stage, as they so brilliantly did with "Beauty and the Beast". Then I heard that Julie Taymor would be directing the show, and my fears were immediately calmed. Her unique vision and style are explored quite comprehensively in this excellent book, as the show moved from conceptualization to workshop performances to opening on broadway.

Ms. Taymor's description of the audience reaction to the first preview performance was, to say the least, very palpable. Emotionally I felt as if I were sitting in the theatre experiencing it first hand. The thrill of live theatre captured in words.

The book is written in a manner reminiscent of a diary, cataloging every step of the creative process, from designing, to casting, to directing. Lavishly illustrated with beautiful photographs, most in color, as well as original scenery, costume and even lighting designs, one really gets the feeling of being "along for the trip" from beginning to end.

If you are a fan of "The Lion King", or a fan of Julie Taymor's brilliant artistry, or just a fan of the creative process, you will not be disappointed by "The Lion King; Pride Rock on Broadway".
