There have been some great reviews here; I just want to add my two cents worth:
This book goes the extra league and then some! So many nice "Alternative Lifestyle" romance novels are too short, it was soooo rewarding to have a 320+ page tome to sink my teeth into.
I like as well there is a difference from other medieval books wherein the woman/heroin has to pretend to be a man (Her scarred body notwithstanding.) Riannon of Gast is a character of utmost honor, even when it causes her nothing but hardship and heartbreak. Her estrangement from her family and the awful childhood alluded to never breaking her resolve to be honest to who she is.
The language is wonderfully faithful to the time period, without EVER getting too heavy or cumbersome. And in the character of Lady Eleanor, the language adds a serrated edge to her wonderfully wry and rapier-like wit! (No wonder Riannon so wisely cried out for parlay and surrendered!) It is extraordinary AND frustrating to see someone so incredibly brilliant, beautiful and wise have to endure the unbearable indignities women of the time had to suffer.
The third-portion of the triangle is the character of the priestess Aveline. She is intriguing, in that even as we dislike and even hate the cutthroat and power-seeking actions she takes (and the hardships those actions force our heroin and her lover through) the author takes the time and has the wisdom to show us the misguided but possibly honest reasons and motivations that make us question any quick and easy conclusion that she must be "the villain" of the story.
There is action and adventure, magic and curses, political and religious intrigue, heroism and heartbreak, and the aguish of honor above personal need!
... and yes, there is lovemaking. I shan't spoil things by reviling who trips-up whom, but the dance that follows is both satisfying for the reader (and the principals!) and full of feeling.
I am surprised to read that the author does not intend a sequel. Considering the depth she goes through to create not only such incredible characters, but to give so many hints of "what is yet to come", and leaves us at the end of the book on such an uncertain note, I am utterly unbelieving, and quite certain there WILL be a sequel. After the success (and forthcoming sequel) of another medieval romance from the same publisher (Sword of the Guardian) I hope the author takes heart and picks up where she left us. (pleasepleasepleaseplease!!!!)
I have already bought L-J Baker's other book "Broken Wings", and I can't wait to read it.
