Book Reviews of Lady in the Water: A Bedtime Story

Book Review: All parents must get it for their children!
Summary: 5 Stars

A Masterpiece!

The story in this book doesn't matter, it could be about anything, I discussed it with my 12 years old twins at length, we all agree, everyone should read this book many times.

It has a hidden meaning and a hidden message, it's a challenge, it's a lot of things, it's masterfully crafted to hide the message and gives clues using words and images.

I can't say what it's message means, it would defeat the purpose, besides, what I got from it is not going to be exactly the same for everyone, best thing to do is to get used to the idea of re-reading it every now and then, looking for more clues and meanings hidden in beautiful images and masterfully crafted words.

Book Review: An Art Book in Sheep's Clothing
Summary: 1 Stars

This book is not for kids. It is for adult fans of M. Night that want to experience all he has to offer.

First off, the story is kind of strange. It is weirdly worded in places, and I can see some kids needing plenty more explanation as to what is happening... or more than likely just getting bored.

Second, the art is for adults. It is the kind of art where the "object" is missing. An adult mind can easily add depth to the image and let their imagination run wild. A child will probably not be entertained by the boring images. For instance, there is one page with only ripples in a backyard pool. The image is supposed to link up with the faerie-thing living in the pool, but a child might have to have that explained and then wonder why we aren't seeing the creature. Another image is the cave where the creature dwells beneath the pool, and all it shows are the glowing cracks. I think this is fine for an adult with an art book, but not for a child to be read at his bed time.

Finally, and the biggest nail in the coffin is the amount of white space this book has. There are full page spreads (meaning everything you see with the page open) that are nothing but a few lines of text and a sketched shape. It would be fine if the text were so evocative that nothing was needed in that white space, but that is far from the case. This, I think, is the biggest step away from a child's bedtime book into an art book. There is just too little for the child to look forward too or pay attention to.

Others will probably disagree with me and say that the book is meant to be a fuzzy story where your imagination supplies all the details. I agree. I enjoy having the book, being an adult fan of M. Night. My kids, and I suspect others, would rather enjoy a more straightforward, coherent story with full page pictures and no white space.

Book Review: Beautiful book for kids
Summary: 3 Stars

This a rare and beautiful nighttale in the form of an illustrations book, providing, in a very short tale, all the elements (magic, fear, hope...) of a real fairy tale. For those searching for a "book of the film" this is only an intro to the story, which remains untold in their details.

Book Review: Beautiful.
Summary: 5 Stars

Seeing as I'm 22 I was a little hesitant about buying a children's book, but I've been a huge fan of M. Night's work since The Sixth Sense so I couldn't resist. It's very enchanting, and the artwork vaguely reminds me of the stories I was read as a child - such as Jumanji and The Polar Express. I actually saw the movie before getting the book, and the plots are different but they're equally fantastic and original. Night is an amazing storyteller, and I look forward to his next project.

Book Review: Book review of "Lady in the Water"
Summary: 4 Stars

Great book for telling those mildly spooky stories to children at night. Too old for the toddlers but ideal for the 7 plus year olds. Movie out now to compliment the book.
