Book Reviews of Lady in the Water: A Bedtime StoryBook Review: Minimalistic story, infinite possibilities Summary: 4 Stars
Though some readers will find this 'bedtime' story too creepy for their own children, others will see that Shyamalan has created a charming fairy tale that invites children to exercise their vast imaginations. Lady in the Water lays the basic framework for a children's tale, explaining the fictional creatures, but not delving into the intricate interactions of the creatures. Shyamalan also does not have a main character, but rather suggests that the child reading the story is the main character, and the events are occurring in the child's own backyard. This framework, paired with extraordinary illustrations is rich fodder for any child's imagination.
Book Review: Mystery at the core of our lives Summary: 5 Stars
This is a wonderfully vague and inspiring tale of mystery, inspiration, and hope. For children, and the child in adults of any age, this story creates more mysteries than it answers, and plants the hope and expectation that we can witness and be part of something important and extraordinary: that we have a significant role to play in the course of our lives and those around us. In our own backyard, in the most mundane of circumstances, a significant drama may play out, and we may be the player that changes destiny in a small but critical way. This is a wonderful seed to plant in the mind of your child, or yourself, that each of us has a role to play that is profound, no matter how humble our situation may be.
Book Review: Need a gift idea? New baby on the way? Get this book! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this book before the movie trailor came out. When it arrived I was worried that it might be too scary for a bedtime story for my pregnant best friend. Of course, I read it and enjoyed the entire book and illustrations. It was so different than a "typical" bedtime story and my friend and I are anything but "typical." I scribbled in my dedication and shipped it over to my bf.. When she opened it, she connected it with the "scary movie trailor!" Oh no, I didn't even think about that. I also had forgotten that my bf is a scaredy cat and just might read the book and take it into her own life (having a pool herself - hence the gift), which she did. She read the first two pages (nypmh, scary person in pool, etc.) she slammed the book shut. "Why do you hate the baby!!??" she cried outloud. She immediately called me and asked about the package. I explained that I bought and read the book BEFORE the movie came out. THe book is much "nicer" than the movie trailor of course. BUT, can you expect anything less from M.Night Shymalan? I love his movies and I love this book!! I would raise my kid to keep his/her imagination and to always be creative and that is what this book encourages...even for adults! :-)
Book Review: No Bad! Summary: 4 Stars
I'm an adult. I liked the book, but, thought that it might be a
little scarry for some kids, but, I also think it might get kids
to use their imagination.
Book Review: Not For Kids Summary: 2 Stars
M. Night Shyamalan's Lady In The Water was a bit disturbing. As I was reading it, I tried to read it from a children's perspective. I found that the content would have completely freaked me out as a child. I'm certain that with the simple mind of a child, I would have focused only on those odd things living in my back yard, and not on the only small part of the book that focused on something positive. That being, that if I become a "vessel", I will do something great in the world. If I had children of my own, this is not a book I would choose for them to read. I could hear it now, "Mom, do we have these scary creatures in our back yard?" The other thing I noticed was the extreme waste of paper. The author could have fit the entire story on one page. Some might call it art, but thank goodness I am not an environmentalist, or I would have additional complaints added to those I have stated. I believe a book written for children should trigger their imagination in a positive manner. It shouldn't cause fear and anxiety of things that don't exist, giving them thoughts that, they might. There is truly enough evil and fear in the world for kids today. All they have to do is see the news, a newspaper or hear the adults around them talk about things going on in the world. Unfortunately, there is also the World Wide Web that with one click of the mouse will take kids to scary places. With the world we live in today, I feel that people who write books for children have a responsibility in looking out for them, writing something that will help them grow in a positive manner. Not write things that will cause fear, doubt, anxiety, frustration and anger to just name a few. The world will continue to decline in goodness as long as outside influences remain evil.
