Book Reviews of Lake in the Clouds

Book Review: Fell A Little Flat
Summary: 3 Stars

I would have to agree with another review that the romance between Hannah and Strikes-the-Sky fell a little flat. I loved how the relationship between Elizabeth and Nathaniel developed in Into the Wilderness. It went into detail and really showed you why and how they fell in love. For Hannah and Stikes-the-Sky I felt it was just skimmed over and under developed and such a short part of the book. I wanted the details of that relationship to make up more of the book. I'm glad the love between Elizabeth and Nathaniel was not lost though even though there was more of a focus on Hannah. Apart from that I still very much enjoyed the book and have nearly finished the series. I highly recommend it.

Book Review: Great read
Summary: 2 Stars

This is the third in the series by Sara Donati. All three are excellant books and she follows the story line extremely well from the beginning of the series. Having lived and grown up in the area in which the story takes place, I am familiar with locales, etc. Very well done!

Book Review: Heart pounding!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is part of the Wilderness series by Sara Donati. Every book just keeps on getting better. Full of history, romance and laughs. I love Sara's writing style...she's very descriptive of the people and surroundings making you feel like you're there. It's hard to put down. My heart pounds wanting to know what is going to happen next.

Book Review: I give up
Summary: 1 Stars

I've tried to make myself like this series but I just can't continue. I find these books long-winded and boring...a bad combination. I never quit on a book but I'm not even half way through this one & I'm calling it quits. The story just isn't worth the time, no matter how you cut it.

Book Review: It's not easy, growing up between worlds...
Summary: 4 Stars

Despite the title, much of this book -- the third in the "Wilderness" series -- takes place away from the Bonner family home Lake in the Clouds. Now a young woman serious about pursuing medicine, 18-year-old Hannah Bonner embarks on an intership with a medical clinic in early 19th century New York City. Her intent is to learn about the new smallpox vaccine, so she can bring the knowledge home to her village, and more importantly, her fellow Indians.

Yet of course, in attempting such a thing, Hannah faces enormous prejudice, as much of New York is open in their dislike of women practicing medicine -- let alone half-Indian women.

Back at home, Hannah's family is trying to help a young pregnant slave woman on her journey to freedom. Adding to the obvious difficulties is Liam Kirby, a bounty hunter on her heels -- despite his having been part of the Bonner's family as a child.

All the while, Hannah also struggles with her sense of self, her feelings of being caught between the white and the Indian cultures. She knows the decisions she makes now will affect her life's path forevermore -- especially when a young Mohawk she's immediately drawn to comes to visit.

"Lake in the Clouds" is an enjoyable read about a memorable family, continuing its joys and struggles in a true-to-life way.
