Book Review: Finding Solace
Summary: 5 Stars

Like most of the reviewers here, I'm a member of that exclusive club who lost a child. I was given partial solace by leaders of the local chapter of Compassionate Friends which specializes in grief counselling. All the leaders and participants have paid a huge price to join, but nothing monetary. The glue holding it together is the loss of a child.

This author must have received comfort in writing while passing the time...time in the short term is your enemy. When enough time passes, the pain eases, although it never goes away. In the early months it's hard to concentrate because the grief keeps popping up without permission. I took solace in learning a few pieces on the piano which were way over my head, and doing an extensive photograph editing project about my lost child - a way for me to spend months making the time pass. Our author grieved by writing down his thoughts. My wife read lots of books on grief, but most of them were not my cup of tea. I found an isolated book or passage now and then which connected with me, and I actively looked for them. The usual grief counsellor doesn't have a clue, not from lack of sympathy or effort.

It's been 8 years now since my loss, so I'm not needy for solace, but I'm always ready to hear another man's story...and what a story this is. This book is a day by day pouring out of expressions of grief done in an effort to heal that which can never be entirely healed. I count it amongst those few books that would have been of benefit to me in the first year of my loss. My sympathies go to the author and his family, and my sincere appreciation goes to him for the sharing of his story.

Book Review: God's Grace
Summary: 5 Stars

This was the single most important book I read after my son was killed in an accident with me.

Mr. Wolterstorff, in all of his suffering and doubt, allowed God's Grace to work with in his words.

In the five years since Michael died, we have purchased over 25 copies and given them to people who have suffered losses. His essays have been a source of inspiration in our Christmas Newletters and Homilys by Pastors.

The book that shows you the Grace in Suffering.

Book Review: I am so grateful for Lament for a Son!!, it was a tool God used to prepare me for my son's unexpected murder
Summary: 5 Stars

This book will always be part of my life in such a special way!!!...When I read Lament for a Son, in late 2008, little did i knew that it was a tool provided by God to prepare me for my youngest son's unexpected murder in march 2009. As soon as I read the first pages, I felt Nicholas Wolterstorff's pain as if it was also my pain. I was overwhelmed by a deep compassion ..., and a deeper understanding of the loss of a loved one, a son...Through all the book, I was touched by all the genuine questions that came to his mind, and the honest way in which he "voiced his grief". With profound gratefulness, I value all the wisdom of Nicholas Wolterstorff, his sensibility and his openness to share his life moving experience. In his grieving process, there is a progression ... when he faces the challenge of .."raising from our dark graves of suffering love..." That brings hope!!! I have embraced it now as my own challenge ...Now that I have also lived this experience of the sudden death of my 23 years old son, Jean Michael. I am amazed on God's mercy for providing me this special book as a tool to prepare my heart for what was about to happen... I would like to personally thank Nicholas Wolterstorff for his enormous contribution to my life, now, I want to embrace and wash the feet of all the parents that are undergoing this experience, and share with them all the strength that God has poured in me...Ivonne Tamayo Maseda, San Juan, Puerto Rico. Book Review: Lament
Summary: 5 Stars

We purchased this book for our daughter after dear friends sent it to us on the occasion of our son's death. Professor Wolterstorff is so honest and clear in expressing his reactions to the death of his own son and his feelings were so much like ours. We wanted our daughter to know so much that we weren't yet able to tell her. She was appreciative that we sent the book and we were able to talk more because of it. We will keep our copy to re-read sections to give us support in our grief and we would recommend it to anyone who has lost a grown child.

Book Review: Lament For A Son
Summary: 5 Stars

One of the best books I have read for someone who has experienced the death of someone dear to them especially for grieving the death of a child. Wolterstorff's honesty and ability to articulate the worst loss is exceptional. His wound is deep but he expresses hope in the faith that he has in God.
