Book Review: Amazing historical background, mediocre story

Manfredi displays a remarkable knowledge about the so-called fall of the West Empire and about how people's lives could have been. Christianity is widespread, there is a lack of stable power in most of Europe and the Emperor, as an institution, has lost all de facto control over the lands beyond the Italian peninsula as a natural process of decadence. Darkness fill the everyday, Atila the Hun's fear is still alive in the Roman world and the Franks are the new threat.
However, the main story is dull, wandering and unlikely. The characters are equally unlikely and, at the same time, typical and role-filling. There you have the warrior and main protagonist, the brave and resourceful woman soon to become his lover, the wise man, Gandalf-like-wisdom holder, a black man that fills the role of the strongest in the team and some other unimportant, disposable and unfortunate companions. And the ending is most unlikely.
It is clear that Manfredi wanted to write a book/screenplay for some producer to discover his work and, eventually, release a movie. This was clearly accomplished, with a movie even duller that the book.
