Railroad building is often seen today as a romantic adventure, but this image is deeply flawed, as Standiford shows in his latest book on Henry Flagler. The millionaire had already made a fortune with Rockefeller in the oil business, and reinvested his cash in building railways in Florida. His formula for success involved building resorts and grand hotels where the railway met the sea, so stimulating travel to exotic locations. But the plan came to grief when he tried to extend the line along the Florida Keys into the Gulf of Mexico, hoping to develop a new port to Cuba at the end of the line. It needed a lot of money to build the causeways and bridges between the islands of the Keys, and they would be highly exposed to the hurricanes of the region. One in particular wrecked his line, and the dream became a nightmare, the line of the track surviving today only as a road, reflecting the shift to the car as transport. The book is well written and charts the progress of the scheme, made even more difficult by disease and labour problems. A great read for railway buffs.
