Book Reviews of LeadershipBook Review: "Me Me Me Me" Summary: 1 Stars
This boock should be renamed to "Rudy Guliani: Me Me Me Me". From the opening all the way through, he keeps boasting about how great he is. Non-stop. I have no particular political bias for or against him, but honestly, this is one of the most self-centered and arrogant autobiographies I have read in a long time. His head is SO big and he is so stuck on himself. I was really looking forward to reading it but Giuliani may have confused leadership with ego.
If you want to know how highly Giuliani thinks of himself, this is the book for you. If you want a good book on leadership, look up Warren Bennis. He is the undisputed great-granddaddy of Leadership.
Book Review: A Class Act Summary: 4 Stars
No matter your politics, this is guy kicked ass at a big job. Read the book. Being a bit "yesterday's news," it can be had cheap now, yet it's inspirational if you want to do the right thing, on a grand scale. Are you a manager who wants to succeed, drive your company to unmatched success, without sacrificing your ethics? If you're determined to manage your group to success, despite challenges, this is your book.
Book Review: A typical ME ME ME book Summary: 3 Stars
Being a mayor of city as huge as New York is a big challenge and responsibility. Looking backwards it can be easily said that Giuliani managed to bring city's prestige back, mostly by effectively fighting crime. He also faced huge challenges after 9/11 attacks and coped with them.
Despite being a succesful mayor, he was nots so succesfull in book writing. It can easily be defined, that writing this book was part of his ambitions to become the president of USA so it is a openly "me, me, me" book.
When reading it, sometimes it seems that he was fighting the bullies and rescuing people from Twin Towers all by himself.
Still, he gives some valuable tips about succesfull leadership - every chapter is devoted to one exact feature. They are absolutely true, clear and easily implemented, so it's worth reading this book.
In the end - one quick tip: if you're very busy, just read the taglines. In most cases that's enough.
Book Review: Best book I've read in YEARS Summary: 5 Stars
After I read this book I reordered three more. One for every one of my adult children. I have recommended it to all my friends. It is such a great success story. I visited NYC 20 years ago and it was scarry. I have been there several times recently and it is delightful. He really did transform the city like no other leader before him. In addition he led the nation through 9/11 with strength and dignity (while fighting cancer!)
A great book I can not recommend highly enough.
Book Review: Determined Summary: 5 Stars
This was a quick read. For those who think this is just a book about his performance on 9-11, read on. This is a book on his whole professional career. For those who want a sordid description on his several marriages, look elsewhere. Rather this is an exhaustive collection of stories and facts about his time as US Attorney, Deputy AG, and Mayor of NY. He also devotes sometime talking about his prostate cancer and decision to withdraw from the US Senate race in 2000. The last chapter is an intimate window of Rudy's soul.
This book is not a self-congratulatory expose about how great his is. What it does show is his passion to bring justice to criminal elements of society - mafia, corrupt officials, ivan boesky. It shows his ability to work under 2 Republican administrations and his experience in Washington. It shows his ability to manage and govern the "ungovernable city". It shows his inner strength during the WTC attacks and the myriad of issues that he had to face particularly in light of the death, destruction, and possible subsequent attacks (?anthrax).
Rudy Giuliani is an impassioned leader who has long resume of accomplishments who's singular focus in a future presidency will be to eliminate radical islam. Whether America is up to the task, we'll know more by the end of the primaries.
