Book Reviews of Lean Mean Thirteen (Stephanie Plum, No. 13)Book Review: Classic Stephanie Plum Summary: 5 StarsI love Janet Evanovich! Funny, quirky, and believable characters. This book is no exception. The only thing I don't like is the OCCASIONAL rough language. However, for me, the good outweighs the bad BIG TIME.
Book Review: I did laugh Summary: 5 StarsBooks in the Stephanie Plum series should never be read too close together. I made that mistake with the first eight or so. Then I started to read them a year apart, as published. Book 12 and this one, 13, are either the best of the lot, or I had a long rest between them.
The slightly picaresque plot is a little thin for crime fiction, as it is in all the books. It mostly consists of a series of incidents in which Ms. Plum, bounty hunter, gets humiliated, loses her handcuffs, is tasered or slimed by an exploding squirrel. I did laugh aloud several times.
There are good characters, although Plum's two erstwhile lovers, Morelli and Ranger, have grown a little tiresome. Her family is fun and quirky, a grandmother who wears a shirt that says she is "sassy" and enjoys visiting funeral homes, a mother who irons when she is worried, which is often. A dog named Bob comes and goes, while a hamster comes out of his soup can only for tidbits of food. Then there is Lula, Plum's co-worker, a hefty black ex-hooker in spandex who is always hungry--and it shows. And, of course, there is a generous supply of bail skippers who must to be apprehended, although Plum has little success with that in this book.
The setting is Trenton, New Jersey, or rather the seedier and grimier parts of that city. Plum's car is an a one time police car, an old Crown Victoria that threatens to conk out and finally does after it has a bullet hole in the back window and squirrel slime all over the dashboard.
This is one of the better books in the series. Or maybe I've just not read one for a time and it feels new again.
Book Review: Okay Summary: 3 StarsI had high hopes for this book and was let down. Granted there were a few parts that made me laugh, I just did not find it as interesting as the previous Stephanie Plum books. Seems like they are losing steam.
Book Review: The beat goes on Summary: 4 StarsThis isn't quite as good as Twelve Sharp (which was the best in quite a while) but it's still good entertainment.
I disagree with readers who object to the continuation of the Stephanie/Morelli/Ranger theme. Evanovich has made clear that Morelli wants Stephanie to quit her job and do something much more conventional than being a bounty hunter--that's been mentioned in several novels now. So if she married Morelli, which quite a few readers seem to be rooting for, that would, essentially, mean either (1) the end of the series, since there wouldn't be any more plot material; or (2) a trip to the divorce court in fairly short order because Stephanie didn't adapt well to sedate housewifery. Neither of these is really a good proposed solution in the long run--the first because it would mean we wouldn't have any more Plum books and the second because it would be terribly depressing rather than amusing.
Book Review: Another classic from Ms. Evanovich! Summary: 5 StarsI love this series! I actually liked this book better than some of the previous ones in the series because she doesn't go into all the details explaining who Stephanie is and what she does.
But she does a fantastic job at keeping the book moving and making me laugh out loud!!!
I can't wait for more and more and more and more ...
