Book Reviews of Leap Day

Book Review: LOVED EVERY PAGE!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Whoever didn't like this book must have completely missed the point! Yes, teenagers are self-centered. We HAVE to be! Every single character in this book felt totally real to me and i'm 16, too. I also laughed so hard reading it that the teacher in study hall took it away for the rest of the period. My friends are fighting over who gets to read it next!

Book Review: Leap Day
Summary: 5 Stars

Wow! Josie has one of the most crazy birthdays of all time! Jam-packed with tons of surprises, and a great way to show several different points of view. Recommended mostly for teen readers.

Book Review: Leap Day
Summary: 4 Stars

365 days of waiting patiently until one of the best days of the year, your birthday. Can you imagine waiting 1,460 days until your special day? In the book Leap Day, Josie is celebrating her 16th birthday. However, it is technically only her fourth. She is one of the few leapers. In Leap Day, Josie's family and friends try to make her birthday one to remember since it's her last teenage birthday.
Josie is on a magical ride today. She has many adventures, struggles, and memories. Nervous as it can be, Josie is prepared for trying out for her school's play "Romeo and Juiliet," along with one of her best friens. Also she is led to a mystery lake for her to experience things for the first time. There, a secret is uncovered and she has to make a difficult decision. Not only is it Josie's birthday, but she decides to take her drivers education test. Yet her excitement isn't done until her and her friends race in a grade scavenger hunt.
Wendy Mass does a terrific job pulling you into other people's views. In this book, one chapter is written by Josie herself. Yet, the next chapter is in the approach of the people around her and what of teir reactions and thoughts are. Leap Day really draws you into the book. This book helped me realize how my every move not only affects me but the people around me too. It starts out with Josie lying on the floor of her bedroom staring at nothing but the ceiling, though, this is quite normal for her. If you enjoy teenage drama stories, you'd really like this. I feel like I can put myself in the place of Josie. Mass is an exquisite writer and I plan on reading more of her books.

Book Review: Leap Day
Summary: 4 Stars

In Leap Day Wendy Mass uses a variety of perspectives to tell the different and exiting things that happen on Josie Taylor's sixteenth birthday, or how her mom likes to call it, Josie's " fourth" birthday since she was born on February 29th, a day that only comes once every four years.
Wendy Mass uses an interesting technique for writing. She divides it into time segments - for instance, the first chapter is 7 a.m. to 8:20 a.m. The first part of each chapter is told from Josie's point of view. We see everything that happens, from the people she meets to the conversations she has, through Josie's eyes. The second half of the chapter relates short segments from the point of view of each person she encounters. Readers get a peek inside everyone's head, see what they are thinking, and learn the motivations for the things they say and do. The Author uses first person point of view in all the first sections of each chapter, where Josie is talking, but in the second sections of the chapters she uses third person omniscient point of view. I thought the way the author decided to structure this book was very interesting and it attracted me and made me want to keep reading the book to see what was going to happen next.
In my opinion the theme of Leap day is how our actions can affect the people around us without us even knowing about it. The author's presentation style -first Josie's then other's points of view-offers opportunities to explore how others think. Since the day I read this book I've always wondered what is going through people's minds, what they think or feel about what I say and do. This book offered me a way to learn empathy and compassion; it made me realize that you never really know what's going through someone's mind unless you ask them, and finally it taught me that you should always be careful about what you say or do because you never know how just a little comment can affect someone's entire life.
I recommend this book to any girl under the age of sixteen, who likes to read books that she can easily relate to.

Book Review: Leap Day Is A Fun Read
Summary: 5 Stars

I made a great choice when I bought Leap Day for my fifteen-year-old niece. We're both reading the book, and I've learned that she has a lot of the same fears as Mass's main character, Josie. Mass's use of multiple points of view is very creative, and Josie's family ties and friendships ring true. These friends really care about each other and go to great lengths to keep each other's secrets! A fun read for both teens and adults.
