Book Review: A Queen for the real world

When I first heart that Queen Noor had written her Memoires honestly I thought well just one of these efforts to cash in on one' s splendid past and glorify one' s own name. This has happend far too often. After having read this marvellous book in just 3 days I am so ashamed of myself for having made this unjustified judgement. This book tells the story of a young lady who goes through all kinds of ups and down in her youth to find her very own way. As in everyone's life not all is wonderful but it is a struggle. Of course there are good sides too. Then she met the man she loves and is tranformed in a very short time not only into a wife and stepmother of several children,but into the Queen of Jordan. That she succeeded in all three elements and on top of that of being a mother tells the reader that this lady has superior qualities. She describes how she grows into her role(s) and that all was not an easy ride. Being Queen of Jordan is far more than being a "cloth-horse" but requires hard work. The up and down of the quest for peace for the Middle East, constant threats upon one's life, the life of the King and the whole family, finding a meaningful role and raising a large famliy are rather much to cope with. But she did!! I found extremely important that Queen Noor presented the Arab point of views, often not seen or wanted to be seen in the West and too often ignored. I do not agree with everything she writes and sometimes I find passages not convincing, but one message is very clear to me: a lasting peace in the Middel East can only be achieved if all parties involved are taken seriously and find themselves respected and their interests and demands taken into account. By sidelining the Arabs nothing is gained. Religious fanatics on both sides, terrorists on both sides and "an all or no mentality" on both sides will achieve nothing. Queen Noor with her background and her unique position is ideally suited to mediate between these worlds, a trusted partner for all. I hope that her role in world affaires will not have ended with her husband untimely death. I could see her heaing one of the UN large suborganizations. Her book is a must!! Not because one should take everything on board what is written but because it makes one think and reflect!! It is damm well written and just fascinating. A Queen for the real world, an amazing laday and a bit of fairytale - a shame that one can not rate this book with 6 stars. It deserves it!!
