Book Review: A Very Clever and Nicely Executed Idea

I wandered into a Brookstone store at an eastern U.S. airport this morning (3/18th), where I have been stranded for the past twenty-four hours, and on a need to salvage some utility from my circumstance, picked-up this course in the Playaway Ready-To-Go audio edition. A light-weight, self-contained playback unit is about the size of my credit card (albeit thicker). It runs the course on a AAA battery that is replaceable. The "running time" is said to be about 10 hours, which I may just get to test today. The over-100 lessons are short and that makes for convenient listening with playback ability. I especially like the fact that in the pause mode it will shut down after a short time to save the battery, but it is 'smart' enough to remember where you have left off when you resume so saving you the job of advancing the last heard audio file. The audio quality is good to very good. The volume is adjustable. An around-the-neck lanyard is an inspired touch. Earphones are included. There are other titles and language courses in the series. Each unit has a distinctive book-like graphic and my unit replicates the artwork above. Bottom line: this is an excellent language course delivered in an original format without any obvious competition.
