Book Reviews of Learning to Sing: Hearing the Music in Your Life

Book Review: "Learning To Sing" is a Great Book; It's Very Inspirational
Summary: 5 Stars

'Learning To Sing: Hearing The Music In Your Life' is a very inspiring, entertaining, and emotional book by an extremely talented singer and now very talented writer/author, Clay Aiken. I highly recommend this book. This book has made me become a better person.

Book Review: inspiring memoir for any age
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a wonderfully inspiring book. Sure I am a fan but if I was not I would still find it captivating and inspiring. I love stories about people, especially those who have triumphed over their adversity and taken the high road in life, the road less traveled. And CLay has done that. The most inspiring part of the book for me is how he was able to reframe all of his experiences, learn from them and get something good he could keep even from the bad times. The chapters on his experiences teaching were most memorable. I just was in awe at the wisdom he gleans at such a young age. Wisdom that some twice his age fail to figure out.

Book Review: "Learning to Sing" hardly "inspirational"
Summary: 1 Stars

I was very disappointed in reading "Learning to Sing". This book is a collection of superficial and often trivial anecdotes that may of interest only to hard-core "Claymates". Unfortunately, there is nothing "inspirational" in this book, and instead, Mr. Aiken reveals that he really has not come to terms with many issues, some arising from him being marginalized and a target of "bullies" in his youth. Many of the accounts in the book and the way that they are written indicate that Mr. Aiken still harbors resentment and a desire for vengeance against anyone in his past who has disappointed or wronged him, including his deceased biological and stepfather. Because of this, I would not recommend this book to any youngster as an example of someone who has successfully and maturely dealt with his personal issues and is truly comfortable in his own skin. I have no problem with this book being a vehicle for Mr. Aiken's promotion among his fans, but I feel that he fails miserably in his efforts to present himself as an "inspirational" figure and is hardly someone whom youngsters should strive to emulate.

Book Review: Inspirational -Even Dr. Phil says so!
Summary: 5 Stars

I read Clay Aiken's book of inspirational anecdotes when it was first released and was taken with its honest and open outlook on the various journeys Clay's taken to get to his present point in life. It should be pointed out that Learning to Sing is not in any way shape or form an autobiography. It doesn't discuss every important (and not so important) event that has occured in Clay's relatively young life. Today, on Dr. Phil, the focus was on bullying, and Clay Aiken made an appearance since some of the anecdotes shared in the book addressed the bullying he'd been subjected to as a child.

I highly recommend this book. There are several reasons, among them being it offers the readers some insight on events that helped to shape Clay's life and how he came to be the type of person who decides to complete his Bachelors degree while on a multi-state American Idol concert tour; the type of person who manages to form a foundation at the age of 24 and two years later receives a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Dept. of Education to develop a curriculum on Inclusion; the type who visits tsunami-devasted Banda Aceh, as a UNICEF Ambassador for Education, to offer whatever comfort he can and bring whatever attention his pop star status can lend to this still needy area; the type of person who manages to go triple platinum on his debut album and then platinum on a Christmas cd and still seemingly keep himself centered and know what's really important as he makes appearances on behalf of the Bubel/Aiken Foundation and various groups such as Caregivers and Best Buddies; the type who appears on talk shows to talk with two scared teens about how he got over being bullied and to have confidence that they will, too.

If you're expecting a 'tell-all' book that dishes dirt and gossip about the music world, forget about purchasing Learning to Sing. If you want to gain some insight on what goes into the making of a 'different kind of pop star' such as the one Clay Aiken has become, then Learning to Sing is a fine gift to yourself and to those who might need some inspiration in being the best person they can be.

Book Review: Great Job, Clay!
Summary: 5 Stars

Clay captivated America from the start with his geeky image, but powerful voice. Now, his book tells us how he got to where he is now, and it wasn't an easy journey. This is a great book. I speak not only as a Clay fan, but as an avid reader. It's well-written, and endearing. A wonderful work of literature!
