Book Review: A deftly modern treatment of an enjoyable pulp-like concept

Wilson has a wonderful ability to maintain a light touch even while dealing with serious themes in a sensitive manner. Several forms of child abuse add poignancy to this tale. And yet Wilson makes that potentially bleak theme blend right in to a story that, in concept, seems right out of the pulps. The hero, Repairman Jack, is a man who lives a life of action-packed mystery in a world with no record of his existence. His client is the daughter of a reknowned deceased scientist who has left her an inheritance of which nothing is known except that powerful forces are out to steal it from her by any means possible. And yet somehow, Wilson pulls it all off as believable! He does it by maintaining a fast pace, a sense of humor, and by giving his protagonist just enough vulnerability, eccentricity and fallibility to create a feeling of authenticity. The result is as much fun for today's adult reader as Doc Savage or The Shadow ever was for yesteryears teens.
