Book Review: A Vampire Tale for the 21st Century

LET ME IN (aka LET THE RIGHT ONE IN) is a thoroughly contemporary vampire novel that jettisons the implicit sensuality of traditional Gothic vampire novels like DRACULA and also bypasses the moody and introspective heavy-metal sensibilities of Anne Rice's VAMPIRE CHRONICLES. What author John Ajvide Lindqvist offers instead is a raw, nihilistic vampire tale that is wholly appropriate to our post-nine-eleven society, yet he also delivers a touching story of two youngsters who forge a loving bond in the midst of a world filled with apathy, violence, and despair.
Although LET ME IN was originally written in Swedish, Ebba Segerberg's English translation of the novel is exceptional. Unlike many translators, Segerberg clearly has a mastery of the colloquial and idiomatic aspects of both languages, and wielding these skills, Segerberg converts Lindqvist's Swedish text into beautiful English prose. Indeed, the English edition of LET ME IN flows as smoothly and as naturally as any novel written by literate English-language horror masters like Stephen King, Peter Straub, or Anne Rice, and it is therefore a sheer delight to read.
Of course, even the best translation is only as good as the original text. And LET ME IN is replete with complex, fully developed characters and tight plotting, making it a compelling read in any language. For horror fans who have tired of the traditional Bram Stoker-like vampire, and for those who also seek an alternative to the heavy-metal or brooding Goth bloodsuckers that have dominated the genre for decades, Lindqvist's novel offers something truly unique. Enough traditional lore remains to keep things recognizable, but LET ME IN is truly a vampire tale for the 21st century.
