Lester Bangs was no mere rock critic. Bangs was a hurricane on the page and he didn't swallow the pill that all rock stars were special, let alone talented. In writing for magazines like Creem, Rolling Stone and the Village Voice, Bangs got a reputation as a gutter poet, hatchet man and most importantly - a hardcore music fanatic. He led his interviews with combative questions because he refused "...groveling obeisance to people who weren't that special, really. It's just a guy, another person..." In Let It Blurt, Jim DeRogatis praises the brilliant gonzo journalist in Lester Bangs while outlining the radical, substance-fueled lifestyle that killed him.
