Book Review: I bought four copies!
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm an old, wait, middle-aged white woman and I found great insight in this book. I bought a copy for my son, my daugher, my nephew--and I'd like to see a copy of it on every library shelf in this city. Harper's advice on choosing friends is the best I've ever read. And the chapter on growing up in a single-parent household is empowering. Read this book! It's worth five times the price. WISH THERE WAS A SPANISH VERSION.

Book Review: forget the title
Summary: 5 Stars

Forget about the title. Harper has crafted a fabulous book that will appeal to nearly all teens -- not just at-risk African-American boys. While the book speaks directly to African-American males, its smart yet cool approach to the problems that plague all teens, but particularly young people who are poor or members of a minority group, will also be a hit with girls and members of other beleaguered minority groups, as well. The language is laden with slang but intelligent, and both Harper and his extremely phat friends will make inroads where even caring teachers and parents might not. The book could easily have become sappy, but it never does.

Harper's inclusion of his celebrity friends and of full-color photographs of him partying with them might provoke some teen to read the book who might not at first been inclined to do so. It was another spot-on move by Harper. I am really grateful to him for providing young people with such a frank blueprint for growth.

Students who might be Caucasian and affluent will still love the book's message that everyone -- even handsome, successful TV stars -- sometimes feel lonely, have trouble approaching members of the opposite sex, and make mistakes.

What about straight-A students bound for Yale? They will be attracted to Harper, who graduated from Harvard Law School cum laude. The school's jocks will love that Harper was a college football hero. For the free spirits out there, Harper begins each chapter with a pithy quote from sources as disparate as the Persian poet Rumi, former President Bill Clinton, and rapper Andre 3000 (nee André Benjamin). Harper really has a hook for most of the cliques in American high schools.

Book Review: Letter to a Young Brother: Manifest Your Destiny
Summary: 5 Stars

Bill Harper, in his book,"Letters to a Young Brother: Manifest Your Destiny" focuses on the importance of our young people, boys in particular, paying attention to school, work and career goal. He also touches on the subject of sex, and life aspirations, attending to such common phenomena as single parenthood, sexually transmitted diseases, the crave and greed of material things, inter alia. He emphasizes the weight and substance of words and faith. He also speaks briefly on his personal upbringing and his estrangement with his mother who only became part of his life in the latter years of his life. This black, Harvard University graduate of the faculty of Law has done all African American, proud. His exciting and instructive book should be read not merely by young boys (adolescents) and girls but all homo sapiens, irrespective of gender and race.

Other great books by African American authors are: "Fluctuating Life" written by Jamaican-Canadian Joshua Spencer, a poet, teacher and author, "Quest for a Dream - A Life Committed to Progress" by Joyce Buchanan, Jamaican educator, entrepreneur, social worker and "Leading Under Pressure" by Dr. Gabriela Corá, medical doctor with credentials in business as well. Fluctuating Life Quest for a Dream: A Life Committed to Progress Leading Under Pressure: Strategies to Maximize Peak Performance & Productivity while Maximizing Health & Wellbeing

Book Review: Letters To a Young Brother
Summary: 5 Stars

I am so glad that Hill Harper is reaching out to the young African American men in this country. His wisdom is evident. I bought this book for my son, a freshman in college. I was also impressed by all the friends Hill called upon to weigh in. He speaks the language of many youth. For him to give out his email and answer shows a deep sense of selflessness. I have recommended it to young men and older men. Even my female friends wanted to buy the book. It says all the needed things.
