Book Reviews of Life Application Study Bible NLT (Bible Nlt)

Book Review: An excellent modern English translation with study notes.
Summary: 4 Stars

This is an excellent modern English translation which i would recommend to anyone. The study notes in this version are for the most part of good quality and there are versions of this bible without the study notes if that is your preference. I find that this bible provides an excellent complement to my other bible, The New Jerusalem Bible (with footnotes). The NLT is written using language which is more accessible than the NJB while the NJB (with footnotes) provides a translation which appears to better reflect the underlying, original, text from which it is drawn. Depending upon one's tastes either is sufficient, i happen to find that the two together complement each other in a manner which aids me in understanding the underlying meaning.

Book Review: Kind of dumbed down, and the notes are at times atrocious.
Summary: 2 Stars

Actually, this translation isn't quite as accurate as you might think. In fact, it dumbs things down so much in some cases that it becomes inaccurate. It's fine for most of the Old Testament, but the words of Jesus, hard to interpret, are dumbed down, and the Epistles are even worse. As an example, when Jesus uses hyperbole ("I tell you, in order to be my disciple, you must hate your mother and father, your brothers and sisters, and yes, even your own life!"), the NLT would translate it rather stupidly ("I tell you, if you want to be my disciple, you must love me more than your mother, father, brothers and sisters."). I'm not saying this type of translation doesn't work, because it does, but I think when you flip it around like that it loses something. What Jesus meant was that your love for him should be so great that, in comparision, your love for others, even your family, would seem like hatred. Your love for Jesus should be so much larger that any other love, in contrast, is small. If you buy this Bible, make sure you also have an accurate translation (NIV, NRSV, RSV) to compare to. Also, the study notes in this Bible, in some cases, sound more condemning than anything. Instead of explaining what is going on, it's constantly telling you how to shape up your life. I suppose it is a Life Application Bible, though, after all. I recommend the Quest Study Bible and the Oxford Annotated Bible over this one.

Book Review: Feels a bit dumbed down. Study notes a bit odd...

Book Review: Dumbed down, and the study notes aren't very scholarly.

Book Review: The most accessible translation I've ever used.
Summary: 5 Stars

The finest translation I have ever laid my hands on. A masterful rendition of ancient texts into contemporary idiom. True to the "intent" of the original authors. As comprehensive and "readable" as any modern translation.
