Book Review: A "Diary of Anne Frank" for the Apocalypse..

I read about this book in Newsweek and even though it was a young adult book, the premise was so interesting I bought it. I'm so glad I did. "Life as we knew it" is the most engrossing, beautiful novel I have read in a long time.
It tells the story of Miranda, a normal teenage girl growing up in a small town in northeastern pennsylvania. Her life is happy, but not without the normal problems many girls her age would have: schoolwork, activities, friends, divorced parents, anxiety over boys and dating etc...
Then one day, an asteroid crashes into the moon and sets it off its axis. Miranda's life and those of everyone she loves will never again be the same....
What I found so wonderful about the novel, told through entries in miranda's diary, is that like anne frank, it is a celebration of life and its simple pleasures amidst almost unspeakably horrible events. Miranda's world may be ending, but her life and more importantly, her dreams for her life go on.
The characters in this novel (miranda, her brothers, mother, father, stepmother, and friends) are so vivid you will stop thinking of them as characters and look at them as real people (the highest complement you can give a work of fiction)
Warning: be prepared for an overwhelming desire to hug the ones you love after reading this book.
