Book Reviews of Life's Dream: The Journal of Pandora & KarlBook Review: A Well Crafted Love Story Summary: 4 Stars
Let's not beat around the bush. Life's Dream by Bernard Dove is a romance adventure novel that reads like a "Problem of the Week," TV series; But you know what? That's a good thing because A) it works, and B) it would come out as messy and clustered if you didn't. One last nit-pick before I move on is that like most romance novel's it gets boring and it becomes a real chore to read from one page to the next. That's why I don't like to read romance novels, which then leads to the question, "Why the hell did I get this book then?" Because it makes you feel good, that's why. I'm dead serious here; Life's Dream is the kind of book you need to read after coming home from a bad day at work, because it really fills you with hope and love. It really took me a while to come up with a review for this book, because as I stated before, it makes you feel good, and pointing out its flaws almost seemed like sacrilege. But I really did have to inform the world how it comforts the reader very well.
"Life's Dream" is the story of Karl and Pandora Whitepaw, who meet, fall in love, and live their lives. The two get married, have kids, and encounter friends, enemies, and culture clash. In other words, Life's dream - as the title suggest -- is about married life, from first meeting till death to they part.
Moving on, the characters are VERY well done, and come across as human and having a personality. Karl, the main human character dose seem to know exactly what to do in nearly every bad situation, and hardly ever puts up a fight when confronted by culture clashes that revolve around him. However, his superman style know-it-all demeanor comes crashing down the moment the books prime nemesis and ex-wife shows up. Karl shows his venerable side when he's unable to launch any kind of active resistance and just becomes a docile servant, leaving it up to everyone else around him to save the day. Pandora, the second main character and Karl's love interest is sweet, loving and you genuinely get the feel she and Karl care about each other, but she too has a glaring flaw that's brought to light, allowing for some brilliant moments where she and Karl play off each other rather nicely. Finally, there's Karl's Ex-Wife, Isabel. The Big Baddie and the stories main villain. Her motivation is making Carl suffer, but she has other qualities rather than just being a bitch. She's snobbish and a coward, which makes her the kind of villain you love to hate, unlike some villains, and it's always a pleasure seeing her fail. However, she's not without her redeeming side, as when she finally exits the stage for good, you can't help but pity her in some way.
At the beginning, I mention that romance novels are boring, and it's sometimes a struggle to get to the next page. This flaw is countered, by plenty of moments in the book, especially towards the end, where you can't wait to see what happens next. The culture clash moments are always a page turner, and when ever Isabel shows up its fun watching Karl fall apart, and wondering how he's going to get out of this one. It's much like Newton's Law. For ever boring moment, there's an opposite, but equal exciting moment, so you're guarantied to want to make it to the end.
To sum up this story. It's like a rollercoaster, it has its brilliance, and it has its flaws, but the good, far outweighs the bad. It's most definitely a good investment, and a thoroughly enjoyable read.
