Book Review: A Job To Get Through But Still Good

First of all, I've been a big fan of Dean Koontz for about twenty years. He has been an inspiration to me as a writer. I particularly appreciate that he is willing to take chances, has a great sense of humor, and sticks to his guns. That brings me to Life Expectancy. I do not like stories in the first person so when I saw this, I thought, "Oh no, not another one!" However, if well written, I can tolerate first person just to get through a wonderful story.
This story was a chore to read and I had to force myself to sit down and read it paragraph by paragraph. I cannot explain why, it just took a lot of effort. Maybe it was the first person viewpoint, maybe it was a lack of... I really don't know. I actually liked the premise, the characters, and I especially liked the twist near the end. What also made it great was Dean's sense of humor. It can get sappy at times, but who doesn't? I also loved the ending.
As I can tell from most of the other feedback, he has done a great job and I am glad he still draws a large audience. But I also think that if someone else had written this exact same story, they would have been rejected by every agent in the business.
All in all, I do not regret reading Life Expectancy and look forward to the next Dean Koontz story. Rock on Dean!
