Book Reviews of Light My FireBook Review: RAY ONLY TALKS ABOUT HIMSELF Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this book because the first couple of pages SEEMED to be about Jim Morrison and the Doors but it turned out that Ray only talks about himself as if he was a 16yrs old and has no mature writing in this book. Only the last few chapters of the book are actually about Jim and he keeps it brief. He only talks about having sex with his wife. NOT IMPORTANT TO SELLING A BOOK ABOUT THE DOORS AND JIM. THIS BOOK WAS HORRIBLE
Book Review: Ray's doors of keen perception Summary: 4 Stars
This book is an intensely imaginative, informative and well-written account of the magical days with Jim Morrison. This highly satisfying book is tinged with pagan and mythic flavors that offer real insight into the mystery and power of one of the greatest bands we have ever heard. There are reasons why The Doors became iconic and this amazingly talented musician (and writer) provides some great clues.
Book Review: Really Not Good Summary: 1 Stars
Poorly written, which is surprising coming from someone who takes advantage of every opportunity to let the reader know how smart the author is, how educated and intellectual...and what all his degrees are.
Basically I agree with what all the other 1 and 2 star reviewers have previously written about it. Ray comes across as immature and naive, self centered and more than a little hypocritical. Which is sad, cause previously having known very little about the man, having the book HE wrote to base my opinion on, I come away with that.
I enjoyed the last 30 pages or so where he actually seemed to write from the heart and lost the pretension and condescension for a short while.
Went through the meat and potatoes of the best years of the doors very very rapidly with little detail.
I would skip the purchase as there are better other books about the doors out there for, uh, consumption. 1.5 stars.
Book Review: Shaman Showman Summary: 4 Stars
Another book written by one of the band members (John Densmore succeeded Ray a few years prior). Manzarek writes with descriptive detail, where I got sucked into the whole psychedelic whirlwind without ingesting the magic effects of LSD (those days are gone for me). I do agree with Manzarek's opinion about Oliver Stone. Stone's movie about the Doors was an absolute piece of crap; a sometimes erroneous fairy tale. I laughed at the Doors encounter with the bloated ego of Andy Warhol, who Manzarek pokes fun of with wit and sarcasm . All in all, I enjoyed the book, and would recommend it to any Doors fan.
Book Review: Starts out great........ Summary: 3 Stars
This book is almost like it was written by two different people. The first of the book is thoughtful then it becomes more like a trashy novel! But for Doors fans it's interesting.
