The novel begins with Nikki Dillon, and her father who have recently moved to New Hampshire from New York. They needed a brand new start after a devastating accident takes the mother, and Clara, Nikki's baby sister. Still grieving heavily, they begin their lives anew.
When they were out skiing one day, Nikki hears a sound, calling her father over. It was a new baby girl left in the snow in an infant seat, wrapped in blankets. Obviously, she had been abandoned and Nikki and her father take her to the local hospital where they are questioned about the scene by Detective Warren.
The baby is placed into foster care and called Baby Doris. Nicky wants to take care of the baby so badly, but her dad isn't up to having a baby around. But things change when the baby's mother shows up on their doorstep after reading about the rescue in the paper. She claims to be consulting her father about making a piece of furniture, but that isn't the real reason as it is soon discovered. She wants to find out the story about her baby and what happened. Robert Dillon is reluctant not to report Charlotte, (the mother), to the police right away. But he holds out-and not only that but it appears that Charlotte will be stuck at their house since there is a snowstorm and she can't get out-having no other place to go.
What unfolds for the rest of the story is surprising. I enjoyed the book very well and found it to be nice easy reading.
