Book Review: Cute Book, But Don't Confuse This 'Little Bear' with Else Holmelund Minarik's
Summary: 3 Stars
This is nice little book that most toddlers and preschoolers will probably like. The artwork is sweet and it's message of Little Bear's preferring honey to peas is one small fry can identify with.
As a primer I believe it would work for a younger child reading above level. I say this because the Accelerated Reading designation for this book is 1.3 but the story is more suitable for children 5 or younger. My own son, who is 5, let me know in no uncertain terms that he thought the book was 'babyish'. Oh well.
Text consists of only 16 words which means there is a useful amount of repetition. What struck me as less helpful was the fact that some of the words seemed rather difficult for first graders, but judge for yourself. The 16 words are: bear, cheese, eat, honey, I, little, not, peas, please, potatoes, some, tomatoes, what, will would, and you.
Three Stars ::: This book has sweet artwork and a simple story that should appeal to most small children who will probably identify with Little Bear's desire to eat sweets (in this case honey) rather than the healthy food their mother provides.
As a reader it is suitable for first graders in the third month of school (1.3), although I don't know that all first graders will be crazy about the story.
Note on AR designation: The AR description is a general "guide" that rates books on a relative scale of difficulty. Children can certainly read at levels above or below their group range, so that this number should only be used as a aid to help choose books that are appropriate and not frustrating.
