Book Reviews of Little Girl Blue: The Life of Karen Carpenter

Book Review: "An Extraordinary Biography"
Summary: 5 Stars

In 1983 Karen Carpenter died of anerexia nervosa, a weight disorder in which the person believes they are fat and are determined to lose weight. In the early eighties that disease was rarely if ever discussed like it is today, and it was through the untimely and unfortunate death of Karen Carpenter that the public began to become aware of this terrible and deadly disease.

In "Little Girl Blue" author Randy Schmidt does a remarkable job in tracing Karen's life from becoming a young girl who had a dream of becoming a simple drummer to being one of the greatest female vocalists of all-time. Schmidt superbly traces Karen's entire personal and professional life and leaves no stone unturned. He writes about her family, many of whom resented the fact that she became "the star" of The Carpenters, her mother's emotional abuse to her, her extremely unhappy and abusive relationships with men, her career highs and lows, and her battle with a disease she couldn't shake. Randy details why a person suffers from an eating disorder and why Karen succumbed to anerexia as her weight was the one thing she was able to control, albeit in a self-destructive way.

If your a fan of The Carpenters, popular music, or a fan of celebrity biographies "Little Girl Blue" is a must-read. Thought-provoking and moving, this book brought tears to my eyes as I began to understand Karen's hell that she went through and realized she never did have control over anything.
