Book Reviews of Living on Live FoodBook Review: "Old School" Raw Food Recipe disasters Summary: 2 Stars
I really want to say I like this book, but I find that all of the recipes that I make are disgusting. I am a great chef and can create wonderful dishes, but when I try one out of Alissa's book, it turns out inedible. Not only are they incredibly involved, they take a lot of patience and planning to get it right. I made the "amazing" calzones and they were gross, I never ever want to eat another flax cracker again, and if I hear/read the phrase "date nut torte" one more time I'm going to puke.
this was my first raw food book, and while it was great for back then, there are better books with better recipes. These recipes don't have many of the luxury ingredients that are available now. I would say buy her second book, I will because it's been getting great reviews. Living on Live Food is too outdated to stand out in the current raw food craze
Book Review: A Great Investment! Summary: 4 Stars
Pros:
* Hundreds of different recipes
* Easy to follow instructions
* Fascinating case studies on people who have changed to a raw food diet.
* Lots of practical detail
* Alissa covers every angle of preparing and eating raw food!
* A treasure to own.
Cons:
* Alissa's recipes are fantastic, although many seem to include oil, which I'd rather do without. Overall, a terrific buy.
Book Review: A Raw Food Summary: 5 Stars
If you want to try a raw foods diet, this book is a MUST HAVE!! I feel SO thankful that this was the first raw food book I came across. Alissa Cohen covers it all for the beginning raw fooder. Her large selection of recipes are outstanding and some of them are so tasty and energizing I don't ever want to live without them. After trying a number of her recipes, my husband and I are both feeling like we just discovered a wonderful secret that we didn't know about all our lives.
But more than that, she also has an extensive section where she presents her own story of discovering raw food along with a lot of other peoples' stories. Each case is interesting and inspiring, with details of what the person went through going raw, how they did it, what ailments spontaneously healed, how much weight they lost, etc. These case stories are priceless, in my opinion. For me, they gave me more understanding of the benefits of going raw and the motivation to do it.
The only negative thing I felt about this book was in the beginning -- I didn't like how big and heavy it was. Cohen produced it with oversized thick paper, so it's a little hard to just hold up and read comfortably. But once I got past reading the narrative parts of the book, I realized that most of my time spent with the book will be using it as a cook book. And for that it's great because there's extra room on every page where you can write your own notes or variations of recipies and the pages are heavy enough that the book usually stays open when you lay it open on a counter, turned to the page of the recipe you're using.
I HIGHLY recommend Cohen's DVD also, which she sells from her website. If you're not sure whether the raw food approach is right for you or not, get this DVD. And if you KNOW you want to go raw, get this DVD. There is a whole added dimension to seeing how things are done, how long they take, and what the different dishes look like. And I loved the selection of recipes she demonstrates in the DVD. You could practically just live off those alone, which are some of her tastiest recipes! Plus, she gives you tips and explains various issues as she prepares the food. When I told my husband I was writing a review on this book, he said, "Be sure to tell people what a great companion the DVD is!"
We've been preparing raw food dishes for about two weeks and it is wonderful! There are life-style adjustments for sure and habits to change, but we can see now that Alissa Cohen has given us the best start we could possibly hope for. Her book is fantastic. For anyone seriously interested in going raw, you'll want to buy as many books over time as you can. But I DEFINITELY recommend getting Alissa Cohen's book and DVD first! You won't regret it!
Book Review: A solid purchase Summary: 4 Stars
I have first ordered this book through the library, but now have purchased it as well. I am completely new to the raw food diet, and have been on it for the past 2 weeks with the help of this book.
With this said, here are the pros and cons of the book in my opinion:
PROS:
- delicious recepies
- good explanation of what can and cannot be eaten, how to sprout, good charts
- entertaining way of writing, makes you want to try this way of eating and motivates enough to stay on it.
CONS:
- very bulky book, and while the pictures are great, I believe they could've printed on other paper
- too many real life stories of people on the diet, feels kind of like an ad
I recommend this book to anyone starting out on the raw food diet, it really does have great recepies, some of which are whipped up in matter of minutes if you have the right equipment (processor).
Book Review: All my favorites come out of this book Summary: 5 Stars
Living on Live Food has become my favorite recipe book. I've even had it spiral bound so it's easier to use. Try the Strawberry Crepes or the Sour Cream. The Calzones have become a favorite for special occasions. Most of the recipes are quick and easy and then there are the special ones. Like the Noasted Turkey or the Lasagne. They are incredible. And don't miss the beginning of the book, there is a whole book there with lots of stories of how other people went raw.
Love it love it
