A dark and disturbing tale that captures the innocence of childhood and the tragic obsession of a man teetering on the brink of self destruction. Anyone who is previously unfamiliar with Lolita, like myself, should be warned that the language is shamefully explicit and the content highly disagreeable in parts. However the novel demonstrates how an author can indeed frighten an audience without resorting to the paranormal, the scariest thought that leaps to mind after reading Lolita is that men like Humbert do exist and frequently do ruin young lives. Still the tone remains more of a tragic love story than an exposition of paedophilia, Nabakov often describes events from an objective stance leaving us to wonder about his personal motives for writing this book. it is a destructive tale, that captures the brilliance of russian literature, a modern classic.
