I remember the days of Lonely Planet guides when they were smaller, portable and concise. I also remember seeing my fellow travelers tooling around in far off places with these same guides either covered in pencil and highlighter marks or jammed in to the side pocket of a backpack.
I have a hard time believing that ANY tourist whether you be someone who travels with an entourage or only a simple credit card and a roll of currency, would be toting this monstrosity around at all or even leaving home with it. Is it worthy to buy as a guide if you can't even take the thing with you? Probably not.
As for the information, the restaurant information is very lacking and in fact - although this may be hard to believe - I have a Nagel's Italy from the 50's which has better and more relevant information regarding the restaurants than this did. Yeah, a sixty year old book was more useful than this. That's a pretty sad statement to say the least.
The maps are also lacking and too basic for even simple navigation over a distance larger than two blocks. Again my 1950's Nagels guide ran circles around this volume. I think Lonely Planet might need to drop the `Lonely' from its moniker and replace it with `Crowded' or `Verbose'. Take your pick.
One star for the book and another for the 'pretty pictures'.
