Dava Sobel is a rare find - a specialist in her field who can not only explain the subject to a lay-person but actually enthuse them into finding out more about it. She spins an intriguing tale about the quest to measure longitude and its importance in a world so dependent on maritime voyages. She explains the problem and tells the story of the man who devoted his life to solving it. In doing so she writes with such force that the reader can't help but be draw into the tale of deception and back-stabbing.
A very unusual book which is both an introduction to a deeply intriguing subject and a fascinating tale of a man who dedicated his life to his art and who was prepared to face all the difficulties such a dedication brings.
