Book Reviews of Longitudes and Attitudes: Exploring the World After September 11

Book Review: The routemap for this new and dangerous world
Summary: 5 Stars

Anyone who sneaks a peak at the New York Times website will be familiar with Thomas L. Friedman's writings. As a massively-experienced Middle Eastern journalist, he is expertly placed to be the muse and commentator on all the crazy things that are happening in the world at the moment. His collection of columns from the Times provide concise insights into the issues we are facing and how we should react to them.

Thankfully, Thomas Friedman is no polemicist - he is just the epitome of the well-educated and reasonable man. As a broadly liberal American, he has taken a rational and sensible stance on the War on Terror and related topics. He is neither a flag-bearer for the US government, nor some Guardian-esque basher of the idea that governments must occasionally resort to war to protect their people.

Even if, like me, you have read most of his columns from the net, this book is still worth reading, because his thoughts and writings seem all the more powerful in hindsight. Particularly interesting to me was a column written about Al Qaeda just before 9/11 - it shows just how in touch with the region Thomas Friedman was and still is.

A great book for anyone who wants to read about the War on Terror from an author who lacks the extreme ideological baggage of so many of today's self-appointed "Middle Eastern experts".
