Book Review: "I Believe She'd Kill Someone Quite Easily..."

One of the early Poirot mysteries (the ninth, to be exact) "Lord Edgware Dies" gains its title from a line of dialogue in the book, in which a character remarks that it would make a rather good name for a book. But rest assured, there is still a character named Lord Edgware who is murdered during the course of the book, and it's up to Poirot to discover how, who and why.
After accepting a commission from Edgware's estranged wife Jane Wilkinson, Poirot goes to visit Lord Edgware on her behalf to ask for a divorce. Much to his surprise, he finds that he has already written to his wife, granting her freedom from their marriage so that she can wed another. It is of special interest to Poirot therefore, that when Lord Edgware is found dead in his library at Regent Gate, his wife has no motive to kill him despite the fact that she often liked to brag about killing him, and was seen entering the house minutes before his death.
Even better, Jane has a watertight alibi for that night, having spent it among guests at a dinner party. So who was it that organized an impersonator at the Lord's estate? Who really killed Lord Edgware? Guided by five key questions and helped by a passing comment overheard on the street, Poirot attempts to untangle the mystery and expose the culprit.
As with many of the early Poirot mysteries, the story is a first-person account by Captain Hastings, Poirot's long-suffering friend and the Watson to his Sherlock. As always, he remains largely clueless about the proceedings and immensely frustrated by Poirot's cryptic comments, but provides a natural bridge between the reader and Poirot's inexplicable "little grey cells". Also present is Inspector Japp, though he comes across as a bit bullish and inept this time around.
The fact that many characters are stage actors brings another level of narcissism, deception and glamour into what is a rather typical Christie mystery. In fact "Lord Edgware Dies" is one of the few (that is, *two*) Christie mysteries that I have managed to crack before the ending. Maybe it was more formulaic than usual, maybe I just got lucky, but for its predictability "Lord Edgware" isn't my favorite Agatha Christie mystery. But I certainly don't regret reading it, or any other work from the pen of this wonderful author, even if it means I'm one more book closer to finishing everything she ever wrote.
