Book Review: A Great Epic Fantasy--with a romantic core

I was just browsing in a bookstore and picked this up. I like romance well enough, although I'm more of a fantasy reader and usually find romances fun but fluffy (insubstantial). However, the supernatural romances have been getting better and better, and I'm not someone who will judge a book by its genre, so I happily gave this a try--and I am SO glad I did.
The Romance is fine--the two leads are just amazing: the tortured soul of the Fey King, trying to save his people, and the commoner daughter of a wood-carver who has grown up on Fey-tales and tragic romances, but who is startled to find herself playing a part in one. But there is so much more! The obstacles this pair have to overcome are the stuff of epics...
Rain (Rainier vel-En Daris, the Tairn Soul--King of the Fey), is a figure of legend. A thousand years ago, during the wars with the evil Mages of Eld, his love was killed and in the madness that followed he Scorched the World, killing thousands. It ended the wars, however, but the Fey and the Tairen, great winged cats, are dying races. In search of a solution, Rain leaves the Fading Lands for the first time since the wars. In the human kingdom of Celieria, he finds his Soul-mate, Ellysetta. Unfortunately, she's been betrothed to a local boy who senses magic and profit in her and is determined to have her at any cost. The local population is suspicious of the Fey. Rumors of rogue Fey killing remote villagers are rampant. The Fey believe that the Mages of Eld are rising again, after centuries of peace, but Celierian nobles want to open the borders and trade with the Eld. As the soul-mate of the Tairen Soul of the Fey, Ellysetta is now a target and needs to be guarded, something she (and her townsfolk neighbors) are unhappy with... Ellie's mother in particular dislikes the Fey and distrusts their magic. And Ellie's best friend is the daughter of a woman of Eld, and they fear the Fey will find out and do violence against them.
There is magic and intrigue and danger and battles enough to make any Fantasy reader happy. The plot doesn't exist to set up sex scenes between Rain and Elly, although there is enough about their relationship to keep the Romance fans interested.
I was very surprised at how much I loved this book (and the sequel, _Lady of Light and Shadows_, which completes this duology). I can't wait for more books in this series to be published!
