I was absolutely captivated by Poppy Z. Brite's exquisite narrative... the way she intricately describes things is totally amazing. Her characters are so amazingly real and almost tangible at times. I have falled in love with the beautifully tragic Nothing... *sigh* This was the first of her books I have read and I have passed it around to all of my friends and now I am finishing up DRAWING BLOOD, another fantastic novel. Poppy Z. Brite kicks ass.. she makes Steven King, Clive Barker, even Anne Rice appear like Candyasses next to her horrifying literature, which is very chilling and terrofying at times!!! Lost Souls is not only the best vampire book I've ever read, (sorry Anne Rice, but yours just can't cut it anymore) it is the most beautiful and haunting novel I've ever come across. I feel particualrly drawn to the character of Nothing, the vampire child fathered by the mad Zillah. I identify with Nothing's cold world, and his desire to find acceptance. He finds it with a group of punk subculture vampires, Zillah, Molochai, Twig, and the enigmatic Christian. Along the way we meet Steve and the psychic Ghost, who follows these lost souls to their destinies. I am almost finished reading this book, and will immediately go on to Poppy Z. Brite's other works. "Lost Souls" captures the underground world of the punk vampire. Lonely, loving, and constantly dangerous. Reading this book is like being drunk on a good bottle of whiskey tinged with blood, until you realize its only Poppy's beautiful words that haunt you. You won't be able to put this down. This book was breath taking. I'm not one to sit down and read for long periods of time, but this book pulls you down into the depths of its tale. The charactors, such as the lovely Nothing, welcome you to live their tale with them. Read this book, you will swallow it whole.Book Review: Best vampire book I've ever read. Nothing can touch it.

My friend, a gothic young man who, I guess I could say I loved, handed me the book one day and said, Raver,(which is what he called me) you gotta' read this. I started reading it on that friday afternoon. I was busy that weekend, but on Sunday night, I sat down to read it. I stayed up 'till two in the morning just to finish it. The all time best vampire book I have ever read, period. Extremely worthwhile. If I owned it, I would have memorized it by now.Book Review: Best vampire novel ever written...in my opinion

Poppy Z. Brite has written, what I believe, the definitive vampire novel of the last half of the 20th century. I personally think that it is better than Dracula. The way she writes, you feel like you could reach out and touch the characters, like you know them. When I finished reading the book, I felt really bad because I know that I'll never be able to meet the people that she writes about.
