Book Reviews of Lottery

Book Review: Heartwarming and Thankfully Not Corny
Summary: 5 Stars

We need heroes and Perry L. Crandall follows a path of some of the greatest not by a spectacular feat of sacrificing his body on a hand grenade but by his journey of self discovery through hardship, loss and recognition of his intellectual shortcomings. It was a joy to read... I hope the author gets as rich as Per!

Book Review: I loved "Lottery"!
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved the book, "Lottery" by Patricia Wood. I also felt compelled to write to the author and tell her that I loved it! She answered me right back. I am so psyched!
I can't wait for her next book. I can definitely see it as a movie-on the big screen--and she said it may be happening.
Perry reminds me of a friend of the family who we have known for 40 years or so. He befriended my dad and my dad, just like Keith, has watched over him. Our friend, like Perry L. Crandall is generous, would give away his lottery and has in fact, "shared" his inheritance with so many people. When his parents died, he was immediately taken advantage of by strangers and family! This book is so true to life.
I loved Gram in the book, as she reminds me of my own Gram. She looks after Perry and teaches him things he needs to know for everyday life. He remembers and repeats in his head all the things she taught him. I love that he writes down several words a day to learn their meanings. I love how the author has Perry describe words that seem to help us see things better.
I read this also in just a few days. Couldn't put it down. You will love this book, too.
P.S. For the person who called it "choppy writing" it is because she is writing it as a mentally challenged person may think or talk, I believe. It made it that much more believable! Buy this book, you won't be sorry!

Book Review: Inside Perry's head
Summary: 5 Stars

I just put down Lottery. I originally thought that it was a non-fiction book, based on a true story. I was shocked to learn that it was fiction. The author's insight at how a cognitively challanged mind works is amazing! I loved the characters...so rich and believable.
Sometimes we get hung up on the 'stuff' in life and not appreciate the simple beauty of our world and the people that mean the most to us. This book brought that home with a sentimantal tear. I would love to see this as a movie. I will look forward to reading more by Patricia Wood...keep inspiring us!

Book Review: Inspiring!
Summary: 5 Stars

My husband and I heard the CDs of the book (which were very well done) and then purchased the book for our library because we will reread it. Now we highly recommend Lottery to everyone who will listen! The book is inspiring, poignant, very funny, delightful, and full of wisdom. We like the way the story shows the joys behind living a simple life and emphasizes what is truly important in life. We feel we will carry a great deal of the story with us forever. We're just sorry we didn't discover Lottery sooner, but now look forward to Patricia Wood's future books.

Book Review: It's on my "to read again" list!
Summary: 5 Stars

Love this story! I read the hard cover when it first came out and the story has lingered with me since then. I liked this story so much that I'm writing an Amazon review. That speaks volumes.

A reader had commented that the writing was choppy. I don't agree that the writing was choppy/flawed. There were sections, as I read along comfortably (and hungrily), that were suddenly jarring (for lack of a better word at this time of night). But that was what made this book excellent and THAT was what made Perry's voice believable. We were reminded over and over that Perry had his own, special way of perceiving the world. Perceptions very different than most of ours. Those sections made me laugh, nod, and talk out loud. Gram and Keith were also strong characters who rang true.

This is a story about love, life, death, human nature, greed, and individual differences. I highly recommend it.
