Book Reviews of Love Walked InBook Review: Alluring Summary: 5 Stars
I started LOVE WALKED IN right after the new year. I read about a third of it and then started something else. For some reason I'd gotten bored with it and wasn't sure I wanted to finish it. Cornelia was a little too interesting. Clare a little too mature for a child. Martin a little too strange. But a few days ago I'd left the book I was reading downstairs in my car and it was too cold to go down and get it so I picked this up and haven't put it down since. It captured me immediately. I guess I was in the right frame of mind to read it - maybe I need it now and hadn't needed it before.
I love this story. I love reading about love and how people experience it, one way or another. I love reading about the loss of things in our lives and how we end up being rewarded, if we're lucky, when we rediscover truths because of these losses. And Marisa de los Santos does a beautiful job writing about these things. Her words pull you into the story and as it should be with a truly good book, you get lost as though you're part of Cordelia's life and experiencing it all first hand.
And then there's Teo. I fall in love with Teo. I want him to be my friend, my doctor, my lover. I want him in my life and while I'm reading this, he is.
This book lures you into its beauty and safety and delight and you find yourself totally enraptured in every word, every sentence. Enjoy.
Book Review: Amazing Writing Summary: 5 Stars
Honestly, I bought this book because of the cover & catchy title. The characters in the story are described so well and fully developed. Definitely a tear-jerker, but worth it. Hard to put down, and made me search out more of De Los Santos work (which turned out to be great as well). It's an uplifting book that makes people have faith in love in any circumstance. I would never give away an ending but it came together perfectly.
Book Review: An Impossibly warm and romantic novel. Compelling and joyous. Summary: 5 Stars
This is a wonderfully written book it's generous in its descriptions and narrative. This is the story of the improbable love between an 11 year old Clare and a 31 year old Cornelia who manages a Café and is struck with the love she can feel for this sad little girl she gets to meet through her estranged father Martin.
Cornelia is crazy for old movies and lives recommending "The Philadelphia Story" to everyone she knows including Clare. In her 31 years she has been dreaming of her picture perfect love with a Cary Grant look alike and she gets to meet him when Martin walks into the Café where she works. Martin falls in love and with his love comes the fantastic whirlwind of changes that will shape Cornelia's life making her realize who she loves and what she wants to do with her years.
A moving story from the 1st page to the last one; a story that will make you weep with joy. Luminous and warmhearted.
You cannot miss this book!!!
Book Review: Angieville: LOVE WALKED IN Summary: 3 Stars
This is de los Santos' first novel. She is an accomplished poet and her way with words is evident throughout this charming debut. When I read the dedication, I knew this book and I would get on together. The book is dedicated to her significant other, with the lines, "You're the Nile, You're the Tower of Pisa." Ah, Cole Porter. What follows is essentially an homage to the films and film stars of the 1930s and 40s, particularly The Philadelphia Story. Not far in Cornelia, our protagonist, notes, "Jimmy Stewart is always and indisputably the best man in the world, unless Cary Grant should happen to show up." I nod my head, Yes, this is true. I liked Cornelia and the way she viewed her life as a film, waiting for Cary Grant to walk through her door. I liked Teo and his wonderful, warm Jimmy Stewart. I even liked Martin's flawed Cary Grant and the choice Cornelia makes between the two. In this book, refreshingly, the adults manage to take control of things at the right point, so that 10-year-old Clare is not forced to make it all come together herself. Cornelia's tiny hands held onto them all so tightly, how could they not come to love each other? I did.
Book Review: Beautiful Love Story Summary: 5 Stars
Marisa de los Santos spoke to all the parts in my heart with her beautiful story. I related to every part of this book...even if my situations were not exactly the same, they came close. The dynamics of each relationship added to every inch of the story. I love this book and will always love it. I am looking forward to her next novel!
