Book Reviews of Lucia, Lucia: A NovelBook Review: A NYC Italian-American Tale Summary: 4 Stars
At first glance, Lucia, Lucia sounds like it's going to be your typical romance novel. There's a beautiful young woman and handsome men depicted in dramatic settings. Ho hum. But look again. It's not at all typical. What makes this book special is the writer's knowing depiction of one Italian-American woman's intense family experience in 1950's New York, and how that background informed and infused her youthful life choices. One is also reminded of how different life was for a woman of that era, when marriage and a career were rarely combined. Adriana Trigiani brings a uniquely New York flavor to her book by noting the small details of life in the City then and now, the kind that only someone who knows it would recognize and appreciate. The author wisely doesn't intrude on her many characters; she lets them narrate their stories through Lucia to a young artist just beginning her career. And unlike the typical romance novel, this story has a bittersweet finale for its namesake. Don't let Lucia, Lucia's New York slant keep you from reading it if you live elsewhere. The book's illustration of how an ethnic background and an American upbringing can conflict and impact a life is timely, especially as this country's population becomes increasingly diverse. Beyond that, just enjoy Lucia, Lucia as a good story well told.
Book Review: A Short and Sweet Story Summary: 4 Stars
This is a book I plan to recommend to others. It is a quick read with a short sweet story. I love reading about New York in the 1950's, what a lovely era. Lucia is a woman even the modern girl can relate to. As Lucia argues throughout the book about careers and families, every modern woman still has this conflict today. I like how the author lets us know how all the characters end up. The only disappointment would be the simple writing style. Although, it makes a wonderful short read. Read this book!
Book Review: A Wonderful Italian Family Story Summary: 5 Stars
I opened this latest book by Adriana Trigiani with trepidation since I had loved her Virginia trilogy so much, but I absolutely loved this book! New York and Greenwich Village in the 1950's was a world I hadn't explored, and Ms. Trigiani's love of family shone through just as it had in Big Stone Gap. I loved the fashion details, and the recipes. The characters are people I would enjoying meeting.
Book Review: A Wonderful New Character from Trigiani Summary: 5 Stars
This is a wonderful book, smart and vibrant. It was a leetle predictable at points, but still so much fun to read. Wonderful characters made it hard to put down, I read it in a day by bits and pieces. Adriana Trigiani writes vulnerable, appealing books that are a joy to read!
Book Review: A gem Summary: 5 Stars
Lucia, Lucia is just a gem of a book. It is a sweet, yet compelling story of a young woman of Italian hertiage who longs to break with tradition and follow her dream to be an independent, career woman in the 1950's. The characters are rich and believable and story is peppered with so many delicious metaphors that the entire book comes to life with sights, sounds, tastes and scents. I have a friend who calls uncomplicated books like Lucia, Lucia 'bon bons for the mind'. If the bon bons are as sweet as Lucia,Lucia, then send me a whole box.
