This is an excellent book for anyone interested in 3D models and Escher's Geometric patterns.The book is essentially in two halves.
The first 40 pages detail what Geometric solids are, and how the authors have mapped Escher's designs to the surfaces of seven polyhedra such as a cube, tetrahedron, and octahedron. There is a good explanation of how Escher's repeating designs work, with illustrations of how people have applied them to such things as an enamelled tin container, and an ivory sphere.
But as the title says, this book goes beyond polyhedra and takes Escher's illustrations of birds. lizards, fishes etc, and places them on hexagonal, square and twisted kaleidocycles which make up the other eleven models
Kaleidocycles are a chain of tetrahedra made into a ring that can be turned through its centre, so as the model is "flipped" the patterns change through the sequence of illustrations on the individual facets of the model.
The last 16 pages are the printed models which can be extracted from the book to be cut out and constructed. Fortunately the book is "A4" in size so the pages are easily photocopied to practice cutting and folding before committing to make the models from the originals.
The book is well illustrated without getting involved in the maths of the models.
Highly recommended.
