Book Review: The Master of Jalna - the Tenth Book of the Saga
Summary: 5 Stars
It's 1931 and the time of the Great Depression. Renny and Alayne now have a baby daughter called Adeline (naturally). Verily, she is the "spit of old Gran."
Eden, the consumptive poet, returns home to die having left Minny Ware in the care of a rich Jew.
Arthur Leigh is drowned in a boating accident, leaving Sarah a rich widow.
Wakefield continues his pursuit of Pauline but finds a rival in Finch. She, however, has fallen for Renny. Inevitably, Alayne finds Adeline troublesome and is mortified to find she is closer to Renny. Money is very tight nearly everywhere. Maurice is looking to sell some land, which Renny is desperate to buy to prevent building. Alayne has some money but another way might be to get Eden or Finch to marry Sarah, who is living in some style in town.
Eden's funeral does not go well as the rector is very late arriving. However, Piers does agree to be a pall bearer. Another sad event is the departure for Devon of the elderly Augusta, probably never to return. Piers and his family move out of Jalna and rent the Laceys' house.
The family are aghast when Renny mortgages Jalna to Sarah in order to save the fox farm for Clara and Pauline and to buy Maurice's land but Finch saves the day by becoming engaged to Sarah. Alayne is jealous believing that Renny and Clara are having an affair. They're not but soon are!
The book ends sadly with the first of the second generation to depart this life as Augusta succumbs to a stroke.
