Book Review: Put all those WW2 films in perspective

This book is an excellent piece of research, that unfortunately hasn't received the publicity that it deserves. Well written and structured, it provides a detailed account of the involvment of US and other western firms in the rise to power of the Nazi party and the levels of collusion with the human rights abuses carried out by that regime, as well as looking at the origins of the Cold War.
It is interesting to see what factors led to the Western entry into the war. Arguing that for the UK it was due to a strategic miscalculation over the direction of Hitlers aggression (they had always rather hoped that after killing off his own communists he'd turn on the Soviet Union. Instead, in order to assure himself of the resource base necessary to take on the Soviet Union, he turned on Western Europe) and that for the US it was in order to prevent the Soviet Union achieving a predominant position in Europe, and thus challenging US global dominance.
These perspectives throw new light on the nature of the Cold War, showing how the Soviet Union, even at the height of its victory over fascism, was willing to negotiate and concede to western interests in the name of peace. However, the ideological emnity towards it meant that no concessions were given. The western allies having fought a minor part of the war, took a major share in the spoils of victory, essentially pillaging the eastern part of Germany prior to the division of that country (thereby putting the later development of the GDR into perspective). There followed carnage in Greece, as British and American troops crushed the communist partizans who had led the fighting against nazi occupation, while the Soviets stood by, hoping that this sweetener would show its goodwill towards the west. Instead it was perceived as weakness and exploited.
For anyone interested in the reality of the Second World War, how it happened and the basis that it laid for a further 50 years of 'Cold War' this book is essential. This is not to demean the sacrifice of hundreds of thousands of American and British lives, but rather puts that sacrifice in its proper perspective.
It also helps in understanding the current United States, and how it has managed to construct an image that, upon analysis, does not correspond to reality. Buy this, show it to your friends. You won't regret it.
