What a delight this novel is. Part crime, part romance, part social history and above all else packed with great characters. The central character Maisie Dobbs, in this first novel by Jacqueline Winspear, is as intriguing as the plot. She is an Eliza Doolittle moulded by the suffragettes and driven by an intelligence that is keen and mysterious. The depth of character is revealed in the story as it winds its way through depression England, wartime scenes, rural England and most evocatively of a London we have all forgotten ever existed.The dialogue amongst the characters is the best part of the novel and the range of social backgrounds from working class south London, to the rarefied world of the civil service seems so authentic.
With Maisie Dobbs, Jacqueline Winspear has possible created an enduring character like Poirot or Morse and certainly more three dimensional than the lauded Rebus of Ian Rankin's creation. The next novel in the Maisie Dobbs series is eargerly awaited.
