Book Reviews of Making FacesBook Review: A Beautiful Book Summary: 5 Stars
This is a truly beautiful book. I'd say that it is a great buy for makeup junkies as well as people who are looking to pick up basic application skills. It's full of ideas, some simple and pretty, others elaborate and "out there". The photography is great, too. Kevyn Aucoin will always be my favorite makeup artist of all time.
Book Review: A Dream Fulfilled Summary: 4 Stars
I've been thumbing through this book in the bookstore since I was a kid. I was glad to see it here and mostly bought it to avenge my younger self (who didn't have her own money let alone permission to wear makeup yet).
The only downfalls to this book are that the color recommendations are slightly dated (a sad reminder of Aucoin's having passed too soon), and while the advice is specfic and comes from an expert, it does not include comprehensive techniques to achieve a look. Oversimplified guidelines like "first add a dark color to the crease. Then sweep a light color to the lid" don't match up to the picture that shows a third (unmentioned) color on the brow bone or visible blending done to the temples. I know I will have to invest some time to experiment and match what I see in the mirror to what I see in the pictures. There are probably YouTube tutorials out there that can fill in the gaps.
Beautifully photographed, and for each signature look Aucoin provides a brief history celebrating the Hollywood Heroines that made them classic. (Fun fact: he shares how the small-mouthed look of silent film stars came about--before the advance in lipstick technology in the 1930s, color was drawn inside the lip line to prevent feathering.)
Book Review: A Great Guide Summary: 5 Stars
This book is great for the novice make-up artist. This book show how to use to makeup correctly. It was easy to learn. Kevin Aucoin take you step- by step with picture and detail drawing of each application. He shows you how to create specfic looks using trick of the trade. This book is terrfic. I recommended this book to everyone I know.
Book Review: A Really Beautiful Book Summary: 4 Stars
Not really what you would call a resource or manual...but, very pretty and nicely put together. It's a show book, more than anything...not really a technique tool. His talent is clear, but this isn't on the same par as say Bobbi Brown's book. He's a wonderful artist and his book represents that. A nice addition to a photography/coffee table selection.
Book Review: A book from the make-up genius Summary: 5 Stars
Sure, the pictures are gorgeous and ofcourse no matter how hard I try at home, I'll never transform myself into Marilyn Monroe without a professional cameraman and hours of airbrushing, but thats not what I loved about the book in the first place. What I did love was Kevyn's easy going style and his loving personality that really came accross and touched me. He never once in the book made any reference to his immense talent... instead, he kept emphasising on the beauty of his subjects. A very refreshing approach by a very unique man. I'd love to meet him even if he wasn't half as succesful and famous as he is today. Dont get me wrong though, the pictures ARE stunning and you'll get a whole load of useful make-up tips. I guarentee though you'll finish loving the man more than his talent!
